Bed Threads Review: My Full Thoughts on Their Linen Bedsheets

Bed Threads Review: My Full Thoughts on Their Linen Bedsheets

Before moving into our apartment together, one of the first things we purchased was a mattress. But a mattress needs bedsheets, and I was determined to invest in a high quality linen bedsheets set. Linen is a sustainable bedding option because not only is it plastic-free, but it can also be grown sustainably (more on this later). After doing some research, I came across Bed Threads: I had heard so much about their linen bedsheets and fell in love with their gorgeous colors and designs. I waited for them to go on sale before making a purchase. And oh man, it was one of the best investments I’ve ever made. I’ve been using these sheets for over a year now and I loved it so much, I eventually wound up buying a second set! Here’s my full Bed Threads review and why you should consider nabbing these linen sheets for yourself.

First off, why linen bedsheets?

If you walk down the bedding aisle of any department store, you may notice one of two materials: Cotton and polyester. Lets discuss those materials, and why they’re not the ideal choice.

Polyester is a synthetic material. It’s made from crude oil, aka fossil fuels. Over time, it sheds microfibers as it’s used and washed. I personally don’t feel comfortable using sheets made from synthetic materials when I’m spending so much time sleeping on it.

Plus, at the end of its life, polyester will not break down. Just like plastic, it isn’t compostable (FYI, here’s the difference between biodegradable and compostable).

Now, cotton, on the other hand, is technically a natural material that is compostable. However, many bedsheets are made from conventionally grown cotton, which uses a heavy amount of chemicals and pesticides that pollute waterways and contaminate soil. It is also a very water intensive crop.

Choosing organic cotton sheets is a good alternative to this. However, I find linen sheets to be more beautiful, and an overall better choice.

Why I love linen:

  • Flax, the plant used to make linen, doesn’t require much water or pesticides, making it more sustainable than even most organic cotton. Also, the entire flax plant can be woven into linen, so there’s almost no waste leftover.
  • Linen is a natural fiber that is both biodegradable and compostable at the end of it’s life, as long as it’s not combined with synthetic fabrics.
  • Linen sheets can last for years with proper care, which means less waste.

Bed Threads’ linen in particular is 100% French flax linen. All their pieces are OEKO-TEX 100 Certified (so, no nasty chemicals in any of your Threads) and dyed with eco-friendly dyestuff. They’re also a fully carbon-neutral business.

My experience with Bed Threads

Okay, so now that you get why I wanted to avoid conventional bedsheets, let’s get personal and focus on my individual experience with this brand. Here’s my full Bed Threads review!

What did you try?

I tried their build your own bedding bundle. I highly recommend doing this, as you save up to 20%. As someone who was new to my apartment, it was the best option because I needed a whole set! I built out two sets overall – one that’s oatmeal and sage colored (pictured in the featured photo), another with olive stripes and pistachio colors (pictured towards the end of this post).

Also, FYI, I paid for both sets myself – neither were gifted to me, though I would have adored that as well!

What did you think?

Now here’s the part you’re most curious about: My thoughts. I’ve divided my all-encompassing thoughts into various sections to keep things organized, so feel free to jump to the ones that interest you most.

the packaging

First off, I just want to say I loved the packaging! It delivered completely plastic-free in a cardboard box. The linen itself was encased in a linen drawstring bag you can use to store it, or reuse for something else. I like to use the linen bags to store wool dryer balls inside!

When I opened each bag, the linen itself was folded around one piece of cardboard. Cardboard is easy to recycle and upcycle (I love using it for DIY crafts). So overall, their packaging alone is very earth-friendly which I look for in brands.

building a bundle

As far as the actual sheets go, I truly fell in love with the colors. Bed Threads lets you build out your own set – which means you are completely in control of how it looks. I knew the vibe I wanted to set for the bedroom: Earthy, cozy, and sweet. So I went with soft neutrals and greens. But you can do something very different!

In a bundle, you get to design and choose up to five items: Your bed cover, 1st pillowcase set, fitted sheet, second sheet, and second pillowcase set. The second pillowcase set is great if you have four pillows (two for you, two for a partner).

I also LOVE how it displays your bundle as you build it in a 3D model. It really helps you visualize what it will look like in your home once entirely assembled. The customization options are very detailed and there’s about 20+ various colors to choose from.

Of course, you can also opt to choose bedsheets on their own, individually. But you don’t save as much this way.

how they feel

In terms of how they FEEL on your skin – it’s wonderful. It’s soft, breathable, and perfect for hot sleepers. But they also hold up well in the winter and keep us cozy (FYI, winters here in NY get COLD so I speak from experience).

The best part about these linen sheets? They grow softer with every single wash. I will admit the first time we used them, they were a little stiff – and now, they are SO much more comfy.

Washing them before your first use is best. Just make sure to wash linen sheets using a mild liquid detergent on the cold, delicate setting. If you have the option to line dry it, you should, but seeing as I don’t, I just dry linen bedsheets on my dryer’s delicate setting.

I will say one thing: If you don’t like the wrinkly aesthetic of linen sheets, these may not be for you. Because they are VERY wrinkly. But I think it adds to their charm! It creates a warm, cottage-core, rustic kind of vibe that goes very well with my earthy theme. So I love it!

Last but not least, these hold up very well. They’re durable and haven’t ripped or torn. The lighter set I have still looks good as new, even though I’ve had it over a year now. I think they will last for years to come.

Rating: 9.5/10 (the only reason it’s not 10/10 is because it’s a bit pricy – but worth it!)

This is my latest set – note it is VERY wrinkly because I had just washed it and it was my first time using it on my bed! The wrinkles dissipate a bit after use (so they won’t look THIS prominent after a few days).

Some common Q + As

Okay so before we wrap up this review, here are some questions a lot of people have online about Bed Threads. They’re not personalized or anything, but mostly generic. To make this review as helpful as possible, I decided it would be best to answer them. Plus, it may clear up any questions you have about the brand yourself!

Is Bed Threads made in China?

Bed Threads linen comes from France to guarantee quality. However, their bedsheets are ethically manufactured in China by a certified factory.

Who owns Bed Threads?

Genevieve Rosen founded online linen company Bed Threads with her husband, Alan, in 2017.

How long does bed thread shipping take?

Bed Threads is typically shipped within 2-5 business days. But it can take a little while to get to you because there’s no express delivery options, so expect that going in. That just means you’ll have to order with this in mind (aka, order ahead of time if you plan on giving it as a gift).

For example, I placed an order for my latest bedding bundle on November 28th of 2023: It was delivered on December 10th. Not the worst, but not the quickest either. Then again, 1-day shipping is pretty terrible for the environment, so I’m happy to wait.

Shipping is free to the US for all Bed Threads linen, homewares and third party goods for orders over $100. Orders below this total value incur a shipping fee of $7.90.
