Zero waste perfume is so easy to make and smells absolutely amazing. I used to really love conventional perfume, but even before I went zero waste, I noticed it would always irritate my nose or make my throat feel scratchy. That’s because conventional perfume utilizes fragrance, or “parfum”, a term on the product label that represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals. Most of these scent chemicals are synthetic, and Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that 75 percent of products that list fragrance contain the hormone disrupting chemical, phthalates. Phthalates, used to make fragrances last longer, have been linked to so many health problems, such as breast and liver cancers, reproductive malformation, diabetes, and reduced sperm count. Is that really what we want to be spraying onto our skin, let alone in the air? I don’t think so. Not to mention, anything with fragrance in it can trigger intense allergic reactions, even triggering migraines and asthma. I think it’s safe to say we should all avoid synthetic fragrances as much as possible. 

 

 
Switching to zero waste perfume is also really good for the planet. Spraying synthetic chemicals into the air can’t be any better for the earth than it is for our health. Plus, when you make your own perfume, you avoid purchasing perfumes in excessive packaging. Most of my perfume bottles went straight in the trash when I was younger (yeah, I’m not proud of that). Now, I can just reuse the same glass roll on bottle over and over again to house my perfume. Making my own has definitely diverted a ton of waste, saved me a buck, and reduced my exposure to toxins. I’d say it’s a win-win. 
 
Perfume, even when it’s organic, tends to be really pricey. But making your own is a great way to save money and still smell really nice. I personally really love making DIY roll on perfume, because it’s ridiculously easy. I also had all the ingredients and supplies ready to go so it would’ve been silly not to make some. Here are 6 DIY roll on scents for you to try (including the one I personally love to use).

Here are 6 DIY roll on scents to make. I love all of these scent combinations, but I definitely have a favorite (#1 if you’re wondering). You’ll need glass roll-on bottles to make these scent combinations. I won mine in a giveaway (it’s got a pretty gem roller ball), but a clear glass roll on bottle will do. The two basic ingredients you’ll need for these perfumes are essential oils and a carrier oil of your choice (I like using sweet almond oil). Feel free to add more drops of essential oil to your own blends, if you so choose. You can simply use the amount I list as a starting point. Don’t have any of the essential oils I list? Get creative and work with what you got! Making your own unique blends shouldn’t be hard – just use these as inspiration and have fun with it.

1. Rosy lavender
 
This is definitely my favorite scent listed. t creates a very soothing, floral, romantic scent. It’s the current blend I have in my roll on right now (pictured). I pair it with sweet almond oil.

2. Uplifting Orange
 

Need an energy boost? This scent will surely do the trick! Great for lifting your spirits as well.

 
Directions: Add the essential oils to the glass roll on bottle first. Next, add the carrier oil until the glass roll on bottle is full. Put roller ball and cap on. Make sure to shake before each use.
 
 
3. Earthy Cedarwood
 

Like more down to earth scents? This scent will ground you in no time.

4. Sultry Jasmine
 

Looking for something that’s both calming and seductive? Try this aromatic scent. It’s perfect for a night out.

Directions: Add the essential oils to the glass roll on bottle first. Next, add the carrier oil until the glass roll on bottle is full. Put roller ball and cap on. Make sure to shake before each use.

 
5. Tropical Breeze
 

If you love all things tropical, this scent is for you. It’ll transport you somewhere warm and sunny in no time.

6. Flower Garden
 

Adore flowers? Why not smell like a walking flower garden? This scent will surely turn heads.

 
  • 3 drops rose essential oil
  • 3 drops bergamot essential oil
  • 3 drops jasmine essential oil
  • 2 drops geranium essential oil
Directions: Add the essential oils to the glass roll on bottle first. Next, add the carrier oil until the glass roll on bottle is full. Put roller ball and cap on. Make sure to shake before each use.

Now that you’ve made one of these pretty smelling zero waste perfumes, how do you use it? Well, it’s honestly really simple.

Since it’s in a glass roll on bottle already, you just have to roll it onto your skin. I recommend applying some to your neck and pulse points.

These are natural perfumes, so you’ll probably have to reapply it throughout the day. Thankfully, roll on perfume is really easy to store in your purse, making it travel-friendly.

Personally, I love to apply some onto my hands and gently pat my face with it. Then I smell really nice whenever a loved one goes in to kiss my cheek or hug me.
